Local Law Firm Supports Union Workers
Frackville, PA, April 25, 2006: Attorney Michael J. O’Connor, and staff members Susanne Mickatavage, Office Manager and Heather Stine, Marketing Coordinator, attended the 37th Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 3-7, 2006. Representing over 900,000 working men and women from fifty-one international unions and 1,422 Locals in all of Pennsylvania’s sixty-seven counties, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO is committed to enabling working people to build better lives and futures for our families. During the conference, the law firm provided union delegates with information surrounding workers’ compensation issues and workers’ rights.
O’Connor was the sole sponsor of the Community Services Dinner, held on Monday, April 3, at which union leaders and community liaisons were in attendance. O’Connor spoke to attendees about worker’s rights and common violations of which employers are frequently guilty, including:
- Failure to pay an employee for time spent “on-call”.
- Requiring employees to work “off the clock” or during their lunch without being paid.
- Not paying an employee for time spent dressing in a required uniform or safety equipment.
- Giving an employee “comp” time rather than overtime pay.
- Requiring an employee to set up his or her work station before punching in.
- Not paying an employee for travel time during the work day.
O’Connor ended his presentation by stressing that it is an employee’s right to be paid for all of their time on the job and that all of the instances, as mentioned, are illegal. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, a class action suit can be filed for employees to recover their lost wages.
Attorney O’Connor and his staff congratulated President Bill George and Secretary-Treasurer Rick Bloomingdale on their unanimous reelection during the convention.
