3M Bair Hugger Forced Air Warming Blanket
The 3M Bair Hugger Forced Air Warming Blanket is a disposable medical device used to prevent and treat hypothermia in patients during surgery. The product has become the subject of lawsuits after various studies have indicated there is an increased risk of infection during orthopedic surgeries, specifically high-risk surgeries involving implants.
An estimated 170 studies have shown that the Bair Hugger has been the cause of significant increases in deep joint infections when compared to conductive fabric warming methods. Another study shows that the Bair Hugger disrupted ventilation air flows that are supposed to dispose of airborne contaminants, thus creating a convection current around the surgical site. Other studies have concluded in significant increases of particles near the surgical site compared to other heating methods.
Current lawsuits are accusing 3M and Arizant of:
- Inadequate preliminary and post-market testing
- Failing to warn healthcare providers about the risk after becoming aware of the adverse effects
- Continuing to market the product after becoming aware of the adverse effects
- Representing the device as safe and as safer than alternative methods
- Attempting to hide or discredit the data associated with risks linked the device
While a body’s immune system can eliminate the majority of infections, including those from surgeries, it is much more difficult for the body to attack and eliminate bacteria on plastic and metal implants. This allows infections to multiply rapidly inside the body.
Infection side effects include:
- Hospitalization
- Permanent Disability
- Amputation
- Death
