Jif Peanut Butter Recall

The J.M. Smucker Company issued a recall on certain Jif peanut butter products as a result of a potential salmonella contaminant. The recall was issued on May 20, 2022. Products, such as creamy and crunchy peanut butter, in the to-go pouches and the plastic containers, are included in the recall. The company advises that people who have Jif products that match the recall list to discard them immediately.

Salmonella (salmonellosis) is a dangerous bacterium that causes infections from consuming raw or uncooked meat, poultry, eggs, or egg products. The CDC claims that people generally have symptoms of diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, headaches, and nausea that can last 4 to 7 days. In severe cases, it is recommended to call a doctor and receive medical treatment. Most often, salmonella causes a short-term infection that goes away after a few days.

Since the company issued the recall, products that include Jif products have been removed from stores and outlets around the country. Baked goods, snacks, trail mix, and ice cream are a few examples to be aware of that may include Jif peanut butter. The recall has extended beyond the United States and into other countries. The company states that they are committed and dedicated to help customers who have purchased, consumed, and fell ill from recalled Jif products. If determined to be applicable, customers who complete a recall contact form may be reimbursed with coupons for replacement items.

The original salmonella contaminant was found in a manufacturing facility in Lexington, Kentucky. The lot code numbers on the packaging will indicate if a product has been recalled. The numbers will be located around the “best buy” date. There are two steps to tell if the products are included in the recall. If the code’s first seven numbers end with 425, the product was manufactured in the Lexington, Kentucky facility and should be discarded immediately. If the code begins with four numbers between 1274 and 2140, this also means it is included in the recall. All products that contain lot codes of 1274425 to 2140425 are considered part of the recall and should not be eaten.
