What are PFAS?
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (shortened to PFAS) are known as “forever chemicals”, meaning they are resistant to breakdown and do not degrade easily. They were first used in the 1940s and are now in hundreds of products including fabrics and carpeting, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams. The widespread use of these chemicals has increased levels of contamination in all areas of the environment including the air, soil, and water, including some drinking water.
Is my water source affected?
Currently, there are several sites of contamination across Pennsylvania, as shown on the map below You can find a map of all areas affected by PFAS contamination and search for your city here.
Why are PFAS harmful?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency issued drinking water health advisories for PFAS in June 2022, warning that PFAS are likely carcinogens (cancer causing) with no safe level of exposure. The Centers for Disease Control has evaluated PFAS chemicals in the blood of humans and more than 90 percent of Americans had detectible levels of PFAS chemicals in their blood. They have been linked to a number of diseases, cancers, and other health problems.
The Food and Drug Administration has revoked authorization of certain PFAS chemicals in food and packing materials. Lawsuits concerning PFAS have been filed alleging that manufacturers have negligently introduced these harmful compounds into water reservoirs, leading to the onset of cancer and other severe ailments.
